Carts of Darkness is a documentary film that follows a crew of homeless men who race shopping carts down steep hills in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Shot in 2008, it looks like hillbombing mixed with early Jackass stunting. And it makes sense that the director, Murray Siple, spent much of his adolescence around snowboarding and skateboarding.
However, his time skating was cut short after a car accident in 1996 left him quadriplegic. Confined to a wheelchair, Murray soon began seeking ways to fill the gaps left in his life. That’s where Carts of Darkness comes in.
Considered by many to be a cult classic documentary, he doesn’t just film these guys, he befriends them, gets into the cart himself, and digs into why they do what they do.
Almost 20 years later, it’s still our friend Alex Hinton’s favorite documentary, and this summer he decided to track down the legendary Murray Siple to hear about his experience shooting the film firsthand and find out what he’s up to these days.
