Older skaters love to reminisce about the “golden era” of skateboarding, but they could be referring to different points in skate history, depending on how old they actually are. I think it’s about time we agree, though, that skateboarding’s true golden era was in the early 2000s.
Emerica is one of the best examples of a brand and team that embodied that golden era. They were all true skate rats in their prime, living in opulence shacked up together in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, with no real obligations other than to party and film for their now-seminal video, This Is Skateboarding. It doesn’t get much more golden than that.
Many of the skaters featured went on to have lengthy careers and become key figures in the industry, while others took on less front-facing roles or even slowly bowed out from the limelight altogether. Whatever path they took, there’s no denying that they put out an iconic video that has stood the test of time and has been an inspiration for countless video projects that have come after it.

The golden era is every moment you step on your board. Nobody in any proclaimed golden time ever said, “These years, the past two or three, and the next one, are the objective golden years of skateboarding.” Fuck that. Get on your board, and you’re golden. Having said that, This is Skateboarding is a damn classic!
