Black ice formations swimming in dog piss, mummified gum forced between sidewalk slabs, a bedazzled crack pipe glimmering on torn trashbags.
These are the scenes that inspire Andrew Durgin-Barnes, a traditional oil painter whose subject matter is far from the idyllic landscapes and stoic portraits that have defined the craft for hundreds of years.
Growing up a skateboarder and graffiti artist, Andrew’s art accentuates modern-day urban dystopia through the quiet capture of the mundane. Adept at both classical still life techniques and the all but forgotten plein air, he’s breaking the mold of the medium.
Over the past few years, Andrew has caught fire within the skate scene as a premiere artist for hire, making boards for Quasi, Polar, Fucking Awesome, and Supreme. You might remember Dick Rizzo or Emile Laurent’s debut pro models.
A soft-spoken, endlessly creative soul, Andrew agreed to spend a day being trailed by our camera. Taking us from easel to easel as he chips away on different projects, follow along as he makes the most of his time in New York.
