When I first went away to college, for whatever reason I became obsessed with browsing WhoSampled.com. I spent waaay too many nights checking how many of my favorite songs were built off samples.
Jason’s mix has got a couple of songs that I never knew were used as samples (Baby Huey’s “Hard Times” sampled by Biggie in “Gimme The Loot”) and a few that are immediately recognizable even to the casual rap fan (“Footsteps In The Dark” by The Isley Brothers sampled in Ice Cube’s “It Was A Good Day”). These classics are peppered alongside big modern pop hits and some laid back reggae, making lil’ Salillas’s picks a little bit random, but refreshing.
Stream Jason’s mix below, and if you’re into it, download it here while you can. Oh, and in case you aren’t sure who Jason is, we also premiered his standout part from the new Welcome video about a week ago – watch it and get up to speed why don’t cha?
