Green soapstone, limestone, honeycomb calcite, pipestone. What do these rocks have to do with each other? Nothing really, but in the hands of Louis Sarowsky, aka Lurker Lou, this stone cocktail can be shaped into a hyper-realistic hotdog worthy of a gallery show.
A long-time artist and skateboarder, Lou has worked with many mediums, but stone sculpting is his latest obsession. If you’ve been paying attention, his fixation with rocks started a couple years ago, first with carving stone wheels and other skate related paraphernalia.
Eventually, Lou began sculpting food items: a KitKat bar, an ice cream sandwich, a salmon dinner complete with rice and broccoli. With stone sculpting being an artform known for ornate building flourishes and ancient Roman peckers, Lou’s approach is novel. And it’s catching on.
His food sculptures were recently a best seller at NYC’s Outsider Art Fair, and for the first time Lou has been able to sustain himself off his art, something he was never able to achieve with skateboarding.
Join us for a couple days with Lou sculpting, talking shit, and checking out a fridge worth of never-perishing perishables that promise to be around long after Lou leaves this earth.
