The YouTube algorithms have surprisingly brought us a handful of gems recently. Joe Gallagher has been going through his archive of classic NYC skate footage and dumping it online for all of us to enjoy and soak in the nostalgia. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Joe was dropping videos with footage of Jason Dill, Alex Olson, Brian Brown, Anthony Pappalardo, Jerry Hsu, Spanky, Billy Rohan, Ted Barrow, Taji Ameen and more. His most popular of those video being Lurkers 2.
It’s incredible to see this laid back, partially unseen, footage that has been sitting hidden on a hard drive somewhere for years. The clips capture a city that’s gone now: Dill doesn’t have a mullet and Taji Ameen isn’t three feet tall anymore. The streets weren’t filled with influencers and wannabes trying to make a name for themselves. It was a place where skateboarding was still raw and mystical for the dirtbags who knew.

Highlights:
Clark Hassler’s kickflip to fakie on the steepest construction sign
Jason Dill’s boardslide to tail tap on the west side
This entire Brian Brown video
Andrew Reynolds’ kickflips between two little wedges
Gymnastics at Tompkins
Skating the handrail at the Brooklyn Banks
Jason Dill cruising around the East Village
Jerry Hsu’s nosegrind
Billy Rohan’s masterclass at the Museum of Natural History
Jason Dill’s triple kickflip at Tompkins
