A while back we were in Seattle filming an Adidas documentary and we met this kid named Nels Rosen, AKA Gnarls. He flagged us down to film a trick, and then he gave a random shoutout to none other than Powell Peralta.
We posted the video snippet on Instagram, and it popped. While most of the comment section was focused on Gnarl’s love for the archaic brand, it also revealed details of a rap career and an eccentric skate father.
Finding ourselves back in Seattle a few months later, we felt a calling to track Gnarls and his father down. And while we’re still not sure what to make of it, we’re excited to bring you a day in the life of Gnarls and Steve Rosen.
An unfiltered exploration of fatherhood in modern skateboarding, the drive of a young skater, and what happens when a parent’s dreams are intertwined with their kids, it’s a fever dream of a day we can’t stop thinking about.

That was interesting in the best way. I was initially annoyed by the Dad’s intensity but by the end you realize he had it rough and is just trying to insure that his child doesn’t go through the same bullshit. That honesty at the end, where he kinda admits he doesn’t know how to parent and is just doing his best was brutally and beautifully real. It’s what all parents should admit to themselves- you don’t know what you’re doing but you’re gonna damn well do your best. The Jeebus shit was a red flag but fuck… at least their skating.

Ok, wait. We’re really not going to focus on the real problem? That skatepark “manager” saying he NEEDS to do certain tricks? More bs noseblunts and switch? Really?
That is what’s wrong with skateboarding. That attitude. You know what he NEEDS to do? Be less like that dude.
