JENKEM MIX 161: EVILGIANE

January 29, 2026/ / MIX SERIES

When I think of SoundCloud, I think of 2016. That, to me, represents the platform’s peak, but in reality the appeal of the music sharing service only grew. And it’s on this platform that Giane Chenheu, aka Evilgiane, found his footing within the music industry.

Best known for founding Surf Gang, a music collective that originated as a skate crew, Giane is a rising producer from New York City. He’s produced beats for Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Earl Sweatshirt, 454, Xaviersobased, and more.

While difficult to put Giane into a box, his music is characterized by deep 808s and dreamy samples. But his beats shapeshift often, and his prolific collaborations means he’s always pulling new inspiration and trying something different.

His latest, “Giane 2” is an ambient album that is both blissfully inquisitive and nervously pensive. For Jenkem Mix 161, Giane highlights some frequent collaborators, a Drake and Lil Wayne link up from 2009, and a soundscape from George Delerue.

Enjoy the mix, and then scroll down for a short interview with Giane about his new project, his skate background, and samples from skate videos. Download HERE or forever hold your peace. Peace!

Where did you draw inspiration from for this new instrumental album?
I just wanted to show my growth as an artist. The first Giane tape was me experimenting with sounds and this is showing how far I’ve come.

How does making an instrumental differ from making beats you know someone will rap over?
It’s all about how you feel when the instrumental is done. I feel like most of my beats are songs in themselves.

For those that aren’t familiar, how would you describe the sound of Surfgang?
It’s definitely ethereal but there isn’t really one sound you can put your finger on. You kind of have to really listen to get what I mean.

How’d you originally get into skateboarding?
Watching Rob and Big and Lords of Dogtown and playing EA Skate and Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland.

Growing up, who were some of your favorite skateboarders?
Jerry Hsu, Gonz, Quim Cardona, Kien Lieu, Jason Dill

Have you ever sampled a song that you heard in a skate video?
Yeah, it was an 18 Carat Affair song I heard in a Bronze 56k video.

Of all the songs in your catalog, what song would you be most hyped to see someone skate to?
Once Before” on Giane 2
