Our week dedicated to This Is Skateboarding wouldn’t be complete without having a chat with The Boss, so we tracked him down while he was on tour in Japan to rack his brain for some stories.
As some of you might already know, Reynolds was partying and struggling with drug and alcohol use at the time of filming TIS, which makes his part fairly unique – having filmed half of it while partying and half completely sober.
Despite the brain farts during our conversation we got a lot of details on his struggles with booze and drugs, him being a control freak with his footage, and how he got turned on to the healthier lifestyle he’s living nowadays.
Listen to the interview in the player below, and if you have severe ADD or just gotta take a piss, we’ve got timecodes to help you skip around the timeline freely.
0:47 – Filming TIS through various life stages (on drugs, cleaning up, sober).
3:08 – Recognizing a problem and sobering up.
4:25 – Recalling the Emerica Mansion.
5:56 – What videos was The Boss watching at the time?
6:20 – Getting on the health regimen for the first time (stretching, ice baths, etc.).
7:20 – Was there any benefit to skating fucked up?
9:00 – Was that era the most lucrative time in skating?
9:48 – How he got into buying crack.
13:18 – Critiquing his opening skate line and his favorite tricks from his part.
15:00 – Discussing music supervision for video parts.
16:25 – Editing Baker projects.
