When you really think about it, most of the skate industry is propped up by brands just printing different graphics on the same six or seven blank items and hoping you’re too dumb to know the difference. We’re talking tees, hoodies, decks, and even wheels (supposedly).
That’s why we like what Bob Lasalle is doing with his company. Not only is he offering products no other skate brands are (hot sauces and other assorted spicy culinary products), but he’s also having fun with it and running it like a ’90s skate brand.
Probably the only conventional thing about Satan’s Drano so far is that they held a premiere for their newest video at Cha Cha Lounge in LA, which is about as on the nose as it gets for a skate video premiere venue. That’s not a dig, but rather an acknowledgment that the classics are the classics for a reason, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. They had to balance out their more “experimental” premiere down in Tijuana, Mexico before this one, with 50% more chugging and 200% more puke.
Anyway, we popped by to check out the vid, support Bob, and pocket a few spare bottles of hot sauce. Here’s the recap.
It took this long for Eric Koston to finally look his age. The dude is in his late 40s and entering his Silver Fox era, but he still dresses like a 20-year-old, so I guess that will always help knock a few years off!
This pic is kinda like a modern Renaissance painting. Everywhere you look, there’s something for your eye to latch onto. For example, in the bottom left, you can see Jesse Alba getting ready to plug into the AUX and drop some obscure tracks from the upcoming Frog edit, and on the bottom right you can spot a deer in headlights wearing a gold chain.
The photo even follows the Golden Spiral (not shower) pretty well, if you wanna get super nerdy about it.
I think every time I see videographer Ryan Lee, he’s rocking a plain black hoodie. I’m not sure if it’s the same one every time, but it would make sense, since it does fit into the unspoken “skate media uniform code.” If you don’t know, it consists of a pair of black/white shoes, black jeans, a black tee or hoodie, and if you’re feeling funky, a black beanie or hat.
In other words, it’s all black, all the time.
This dude’s name is Mark Gonzales and had a part in the video, which is a sick card to have up your sleeve because you can throw his name on a flier, not really expand on it much, and people will always turn out to your premiere. It’s low-key a cheat code and Bob [Drano founder] should give him a lifetime contract with Satan’s Drano before someone else steals him.
Here’s one more chugging flick just so you can get a full spectrum view of the sickos in attendance. This guys gonna be listening to the legendary New Jersey rock star Bruce Ringsting in the morning for sure.
OK, I lied – here’s another chug shot.
This was the full range of goodies on offer from Satan’s Drano for the night. I was leaning toward cutting this one because we’re giving Thrasher free promo by including this pic, but I think it’s worth the free box that Bob is (hopefully) going to send us for doing this recap.
After the video, the entire crew migrated from the bar to the LA River for a afterparty / pop-up concert. It looks like these guys managed to find a perfect patch of dry river bank to set up shop on while still being in the LA River. Probably the best stage setup I’ve ever seen in my life, and I’ve been to some pretty sweet music venues in my lifetime.
If this was my gear, I’d be simultaneously stoked and pissed that I had to lug it over this disgusting body of water to get it onto this stage, but the flick alone is 100% worth whatever bacteria and viruses are now on the bottom of those amps and drum stands.
See you next time, foo!
