Sage Elsesser is the poster boy for the next generation of skaters who are unafraid to tear down your expectations of what clothes and music they should like. For this mix, we asked the 18-year-old Fucking Awesome rider to pick out some of his favorite tracks. Despite requesting an unreleased Odd Future track (“that’s the point,” Elsesser told us), the mix is a refreshing blend of music that bounces between blues, reggae, lo-fi and hip-hop with ease.

this nigga said “fuck with real niggas.” nigga, you ain’t real. you trapped in the cherry matrix. “who give one fuck ’bout who music you listen? who dem? who?” alton ellis once said to an antagonistic music journalist before spitting in her coffee. that’s a real nigga. music is just ideological apparatus reifying dominant cultural norms. no one’s skating to schoenberg. so what are these untenable expectations? what DOES every pretentious, walking supreme ad think separates them from the average mall grabbing kook? taste? aesthetic predisposition? fear of irrelevance? hmm. “let a relevant nigga do what a relevant nigga feel,” raps frank ocean on this blue whale track. rather, let a nigga feel he is relevant, because once the flood waters recede, this nigga will be the first to sag his drawls in serach of legitimation. cherry is the worst thing to happen to skateboarding since zumiez. rest in peace michael brown.

They asked him for a track list – you’re reading way too far into things. Ideological apparatus reifying dominant cultural norms? C’mon, Cuz, what are you a fucking cultural studies professor? It’s just music, and he’s just a kid.

If “supreme dickrider” were truly a cultural studies professor, or perhaps even your run-of-the-mill college student, she/he/ze (use of “dickrider” in this scenario is quite revealing and characteristic of the skateboarders’ – and other athletes’ – embarrassing lack of familiarity with feminist and queer theory) would surely be familiar with Bourdieu’s conception of “cultural capital” and thus recognize the understand the function of Elsesser’s playlist choices and thus the brand aesthetics of Supreme/FA/Polar/Palace/3D/Bianca/etc et al. Skateboards have been a consumer toy product since their inception and thus skateboards, skate shoes, and accessories will continue to be marketed ad-infinitum with slicker and savvier tactics. That said, “dickrider” has a point: the subculture will surely accelerate towards the hegemony of multinational sneaker corporations, “street contests”, and monster energy drink sponsorships provided skateboarders don’t put some Pauline Oliveros on their playlists or read a little Althusser in their free-time lol.

Thrasher has been upping their sophistication via use of post-rock/math rock in their promotional material (namely, the SOTY Contender videos). Dudes skating to musique concrète is not too far away

8 years later Sage is still relevant. I disagree with your opinion piece. Def seems to be coming from one of those know it all old heads that tries to flex on the younger generation in jealousy in order to feel relevant. More love less ego
